Reflection About Reading And Reflection

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.” -Charles William Elliot
I find this quote to be fully true and I learned this important lesson about writing, reading, and literature when I was a freshman in high school, in one of the most feared classes there, Mr. Monsour 's biology class. Not many people are fond of reading and writing, especially as an assignment to be graded by the “destroyer of dreams and grades.” The typical reading and writing assignment seems like it would not have a large impact on a student, but to me it caused a change in heart to reading and literature as well as helped me learn and relearn something about myself.

The purpose of the text was solely to inform about the true story about humanity 's first contact with the Ebola/Marburg virus and its various strains that appeared. Testing and secure research was done in Reston, Virginia where monkeys had begun to be infected with a deadly unknown virus, which was later to be discovered as an Ebola strain exclusive to monkeys. A secret investigation was put into place to prevent the spread to humans and how to cure the disease which was also discovered to be harmless to humans, but you can never be to certain about major issues like that. With several near death encounters and experiences with many unknowns about what is happening the book is in my opinion a great read which can provide several lessons other than just some knowledge about one of the most lethal, deadliest, and scariest encounters of disease in the United States, which also in my case leads to a major decision in my life as …show more content…
The book taught me you can never be too careful with anything, but risk is good to an extent, but extreme risk can be easily mistaken for stupidity. Observations are essential in life and writing them down is the key to discover and spread knowledge. I learned that not writing or not expressing yourself is doing yourself and everybody else a disservice. If it wasn’t for writing and expression we all would just be indistinguishable blades of grass in the middle of a field. Our experiences and observations written down help advance everyone. Meanwhile however, private writing is good for the mind and it is relaxing to just free write aimlessly. On the other hand still, taking time to reflect and write things down for later is something that could benefit not only yourself, but others. While I personally don’t keep a journal I do try as much as possible to not stay isolated because isolation leads to a darkness, a darkness that is avoiding literature and thus knowledge as these two are some of the most powerful things in the world, both of which teach us as people about the world in numerous

Even people who don’t fully understand what exactly Ebola is/does at least grasps its utter viciousness and rapid spreading nature. The recent outbreak itself was caused in part by a perfect storm of health in the african region, bad social stigmas, and a lack of public knowledge.(Corum, 2014) Despite everything, many African nations are actively working hard to stem Ebola using both scientific methods, and social awareness programs.(Blunt, 2017) There are still many questions to be answered about Ebola, but the progress made in understanding the disease has come a long way in just a few short years. In the following write up I will attempt to discuss more in depth the points mentioned in this paragraph, and hopefully by the end you will have at least an introductory grasp on Ebola as a…

In his essay “No Time to Read,” David McCullough discusses how reading books is the best way for one to gather and learn information. McCullough talks about the lack of reading that occurs in our society today, that without reading books, we are not gaining knowledge. He believes that if people would actually take time out of their day and read books, that we gain more knowledge than the internet can offer us. He mentions even though we have easy access to the internet with a touch of a button, we still do not use out time wisely, regarding reading. McCullough’s main point within his essay is to encourage people to read more, no matter of the purpose of the book.…

Written language is a trait known to be only possessed by mankind. Although other species may have audible forms of communication, man is able to record and document his thoughts, feelings, or events that have unfolded in a way that can be viewed multiple times without him having to use his voice over and over. Literacy is a skill that adults in the United States are expected to have; but the level of your literacy says a lot about you and can have a tremendous impact on what career you end up in. For this reason, this college English class is a requirement for all those seeking a degree. Not only did I learn how to think of subjects and topics more objectively, but I learned a multitude of different modes and strategies I can employ in my writing.…

I see myself in Walden because I have realized, upon reflection, that my conclusions from facing the meanness of life mirror Thoreau’s conclusions in Walden. In “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For”, Thoreau explains his motives for the unorthodox move to Walden Pond. Thoreau went into the woods to “drive life into a corner”, “live deliberately” and “publish the whole and genuine meanness of it [life]” (74). With these goals in mind, Thoreau entered an environment with obstacles requiring him to get the meanness of life. For example, by removing himself from society, Thoreau experienced how humans must managed economy of “Food, Shelter, Clothing, and Fuel” to live (10).…
