I thought that this article was particularly interesting because it’s primary focus is integrating the hospitality industry with social media— a necessary move to keep up with the modern day consumer. New technological advances are made everyday, and it is especially important to keep up with the new advancements in the hospitality industry because this industry has to be aware of consumer needs in the digital age in order to compete with one another. To find a credible news article, I first used the Google search engine to find credible news outlets pertaining to the hospitality industry. In the Hospitality in Focus article published in 2008, studies showed that a primary element of customer satisfaction dealt with accessible technology use in hotels. These studies proved that Wi-Fi was the service that hotel guests cared the most about. Experts also concluded that hotels that charged guests for Internet services were going to start losing business. The article also talked about a technological advancement in this industry like none other before: the Facebook Widget by Hotel Concepts, a leading property management system provider. The Facebook Widget was a tool that users could install on their homepage which allowed hoteliers to “push” offers to potential clients who have shown interest in particular destinations, which can easily be converted into actual reservations. The academic article was written to inform hoteliers of the current desires of their customers and to keep them informed of what other hotels in the market were doing to keep up with customer needs. It also informed hoteliers of the innovative ways that hotel groups were using social media to attract customers and help them

The article, “Responding to Online Reviews: Problem Solving and Engagement in Hotels”, by Sun-Young Park and Jonathan P. Allen addresses hotel responses to Internet comments and how such reaction affect customer perceptions. It demonstrated that responses to reviews varied significantly by hotel, but by responding positively, hotels build customer relations. I selected this topic and article because I have a passion for the hotel industry and research shows that hotel response to online comments affect revenues (Vermeulen and Seegers, 2009, p. 123), thus this would help me make informed business decisions in the future. Through a literature review of peer-reviewed research on consumer’s perspectives of hotel responses, or lack of responses, to comments and the value of addressing comments, along with interviews and a comparative case study research model, the journal compared two hotels that actively responded to online comments with two that did not.…
