What are the horrors of being a slave? Well, in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, by Frederick Douglass he speaks of many horrors of being about being a slave Many of the scenarios he himself has witnessed or gone through. It’s taught how horrible the slaves were treated, and many of the horrific tortures such as: whipping, rape, beatings, shackling, hanging, burning, mutilation, branding and imprisonment, and several other horrifying acts place upon slaves. Douglass tells that numerous of these torturings, and punishments had gone unprovoked. A slave would get whipped for almost every little reason such as: being slow, doing something wrong, or simply just because a master wanted to show his or her dominance over the slaves. A slave 's life was stripped from the just to end up being another man 's toy. One of the horrors of being a slave came as simple as not knowing their own birthday or age. In the first chapter of Douglass’s autobiography, he tells us “I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it.” (Douglass, 1). To a modern day person knowledge of their own birthday might not seem significant to them, but in reality a birthday is something that makes you human. It’s the day you were born, and once a year it 's a day you get to celebrate yourself.
