Horror films are movies that seek to bring your fears and nightmares to life. They to scare with the morbid and grotesque while entertaining also. They often involve an evil entity, event or person. Horror films feature supernatural creatures like werewolves, ghosts, vampires, witches, and zombies. They also dive into fears of death, of the unknown and loss of identity. They show the darker side of life and expose our vulnerabilities. Movies that push your buttons of anxiety and uneasiness. Make you squirm and try to get a scare out of you. Horror films sometimes mixes with other genres like science fiction, thriller, mystery, fantasy and romance.
Major movements in horror history started with the inspirations from gothic horror literature. Stories from authors like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein 1818, Bram Stoker’s Dracula 1897 and Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven 1845. These gothic stories lead to movies like Spook Tale 1895, The Manor of the Devil and Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Universal Pictures presented the first set of horror films. The first was Dracula, and then came Frankenstein, The Mummy, Invisible Man, Werewolf in London and Dracula’s Daughter.
After the gothic style of horror movies died down a bunch of new movies arose that were self-parody, movies like The Invisible Man Returns, The Mummy Hands, and Frankenstein Meets Wolf man.
