The Homonym In New York Times

Improved Essays
I was never quite drawn to this article immediately, because when I saw the word “period” in a headline, I could only assume it was the grammatical definition of the homonym was being used. I chose to click on the article anyhow, and to my surprise, would find out that my hypothesis was proven incorrect. I have nothing but praise for both the New York Times as well as the editor of the article for publishing this story. Considering the aim of most news companies is to increase both viewership and revenue, I thought it would be ages until an article about such a subject would be published.

Before I proceed, I must specify that I am not someone who would go around advocating ruthlessly for menstruation to be recognized more regularly in conversation.

It is inappropriate and inexcusable. I don’t quite understand how Ms. Fu “shatters another barrier” by talking about her period in public. A much more suitable headline would have been “Uninhibited Chinese Swimmer, Discussing Her Period, Violates the line of appropriateness.” I am a mother of two children who would not usually voice her opinion to the public, but after watching such an unwarranted video, could not walk away from this with silence. I was offended on behalf of everyone who watched the interview, including many innocent children who were not just my own. It was in no way necessary for Ms. Fu to have said what she did on …show more content…
Fu. Menstruation is a natural occurrence, but so is masturbation and do you think that is an appropriate subject to speak about in front of the 27.5 million people who were watching the olympics? Menstruation is in no way something that should ever be mentioned in any civil conversation, and personally I don’t think testing this out on live television is a righteous idea. I do agree that In some countries, there are issues surrounding a woman’s period that need to be resolved, but I think Ms. Fu and all of her apparent fans of the action should consider an alternate, less ill-mannered

In the case New York Times vs. The United States, the Legislative branch checked the validity of a decision made by the executive branch in a court ruling. While ruling in favor to overrule the lower court's decision, Justice Brennan said “ since publication would not cause an inevitable, direct, and immediate event imperiling the safety of American forces, prior restraint was unjustified”(Oyez). The separate branches of government used each other to check for correct due process and to enforce a system of checks and balances. Reason…

Kathrine Switzer took a stand in 1967 by being the first woman to run and finish the Boston Marathon. This is important because she wanted everyone to know that women should be able to run in the Boston Marathon. She is remembered today because women are now able to run in the Boston Marathon and can run in the Olympics. If it weren't for Kathrine Switzer, women would not be where they are now in running and other sports. Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to ever officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967.…

Besides world events such as the Olympics, or the women’s World Cup, you will barely ever see women’s sports being broadcasted. On the other hand, there was a lot in the film that I did not agree with. The biggest thing I disagreed with was when all of those interviewed seemed to be putting down and demeaning the female athletes that posed in seductive ways for magazines, and advertisements (Playing Unfair). And to me, doing this is somewhat absurd. Whenever these pictures are taken they are completely consensual, and these athletes are completely fine with it.…

Sports have captivated humans since the beginning of time, games that involve hard work, strategy and athleticism; games that have been considered manly and dominated by man. Why is it that females were given the short end of the straw once again? Beginning in Greece women were not allowed to participate in the Olympics, for over thousands of years women were still not able to compete until 1990. Stereotypes of women in sports carry over into the Olympics, professional sports, school sports, and helps us understand how women athletes, transgender athletes and mother athletes have rose to the challenge and broke the stereotypes. Martin reveals the raw feelings of the science textbook authors behind the completely natural process of menstruation. Martin goes into detail about how women are viewed as baby producers and if they fail to accomplish that task, according to the textbooks, they have failed to fulfill their womanly duty (486). Martin provides a clear example of a women feeling inferior, when she says “In the case of women, the monthly cycle is described as being designed to produce eggs and prepare a suitable place for them to be. Fertilized and grown-all to the end of making babies. But the enthusiasm ends there” (486).…

In 2015, several complaints were lodged against FIFA because they provided the Women’s World Cup with only artificial turf for them to play on. This caused numerous injuries to many female players at the international level. FIFA has never hosted a major international tournament on artificial fields for men. Another difference noted is how harshly FIFA and U.S. Soccer punish women when they make mistakes or break rules set by the federations. Hope Solo was outspoken in her upset when Sweden defeated them in the Olympics and was quickly suspended from her position with the national team and released from her professional league team.…

Caster Semenya, winner of the gold medal in the 800m run at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, is a real-life Wonder Woman; except for the fact that many competitors, spectators, and experts accused her of being a man at the 2009 International Association of Athletics Federation World Championships. Her “strikingly muscular physique”(McLean), deep voice, and “the way she runs” (McLean) were the causes for concern and they all tie into how society compartmentalizes people by their sex, gender, and sex category. While people often use these three terms interchangeably, they each carry vastly different ideas to create a holistic view of how a person defines themselves and how others see them. Sex is the “socially agreed upon biological criteria…
