The Pros And Cons Of ISIS

One of the most controversial topics in the United States recently has been the terrorist group ISIS. ISIS originates from the middle East and currently occupies parts of Iraq and Syria. They are a very dangerous group that is focused on instilling fear into others by using violence to gain territory and spread their “religion.” In reality, ISIS shows and praises values that are not following the laws of Islam, which they claim to associate with. ISIS has spread fear all around the world, including especially in the United States. This fear originates from the events of 9/11, and the way that the media portrays ISIS instills fear into Americans of Muslims. There are many differences between the view of ISIS from small town people due to the media and the reality of the actual ideals they practice and enact. This fear stems back to the horrible events of September 11, 2001. Even then the media failed to make a distinction between the terror group Al-Qaeda and other Islamic people from the middle East. This has only worsened since then, adding on the terror attacks ISIS claims all around the world. Xu Zhang, a professor from the University of Texas, produced a study in which different media outlets were studied in an effort to procure different trends in biases and changing of information to shape the opinions of views. Her study determined that many news sources changed the aspects of their media to be more “salient, meaningful, or memorable” to its audiences (6). This bias has always existed and contributes to the fear that exists in our society of the middle East and those who inhabit it.
