They chose to get rid of Joseph completely, “come let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not lay our hands on him, for he is our own flesh. And his brothers agreed. When some Midianite traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver” (The Holy Bible 30). The brothers covered up their act by faking his death of telling their father he was attacked by a wild animal. In the bible the Lord asks “Where is your brother Abel?”(Genesis 4:9) and Cain says he doesn't know and that he isn’t his brother's keeper, even though he knows exactly what happened to Abel because he killed him. This is similar to the Kite Runner when Amir plants his birthday money under Hassan’s mattress and lies about Hassan stealing it. Amir does this because he wants to remove Hassan from their house so he can have Babas attention all to himself. Because he is a Pashtun, he believes he is the worthier son. The civilization of the ancient Hebrews is one of the most fascinating to study, if only due to its longevity in the face of countless trials faced throughout history. Their imagined community, formulated by their religious practices and their devotion to scripture as the center of their beliefs, kept their culture mostly separate from others, allowing them to retain many customs and practices to which they still adhere to this day. The Book of Job in the Hebrew Bible, written circa 580-400 BC, is an excellent indicator of the importance of religious text in their society. It tells the story of a man named Job, the godliest man on earth, of whom God boasts and protects, though Satan, referred to as “the Adversary,” challenges Job’s righteousness,…

In Genesis, Cain resents his brother Abel because of the favor he has received with God. Because of his jealousy, Cain lures Abel out into the field and “[w]hen they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him” (Gen. 4.8). In the Book of Genesis, the animosity Cain has for his brother Abel arises out of envy towards him. Jealousy is just another part of everyday life. As shown in Bobbie Ann Mason 's "Being Country", the story just shows that it 's normal to be envious of others and just look at positive things in their lives while ignoring the negative things. For example, when Mason 's family was having dinner, instead of looking at it like a feast because of the plentiful food her family had. Mason looked at it as "fuel for work". Instead of always looking at the positive side, we as humans like to generate an unreasonable conclusion from what 's bad in our lives to what 's good in someone else 's.…
