Death comes for some in an instant, and for others over a period of suffering. It may be foreseen or come without warning. It is almost never a choice and is known as one of mankind’s deepest fears. Murder, and more specifically, genocide, has ended many innocent lives. One of the most well known events that demonstrated the sickening act of genocide is the Holocaust. The Angel of Death was the most horrific and feared aspect of the Holocaust amongst the Jews in Auschwitz. It was known as an evil that took a human form in Dr. Joseph Mengele. A Nazi scientist, he gained his authentic nickname through the inhumane experiments he performed on human patients. From 1941 to 1945, Jewish people were systematically murdered in one of history’s mass murders. Other victims include Romanians, Slavs, Soviet Prisoners Of War, ethnic Poles, communists, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and even the physically and mentally disabled. The genocide was led by one of the utmost despised men in history, Adolf Hitler. Essentially, Hitler decided that the best way to improve Germany was by creating a pure population; one with no “mistakes” or physical differentiation. This aided in his political campaign, and he eventually gained momentum in his rise as leader. After deciding that quarantining Jews in ghettos was simply not enough, he came up with what he called the “Final Solution.” This course of action was the focal point of the Jewish extermination during the Holocaust, in which they were sent to concentration camps to either be murdered or worked to death. There were 71 concentration camps, with the most famous being Auschwitz-Birkenau for it’s sheer size and the astounding number of people that died there. It is no surprise that one of the most despicable men, Dr. Mengele, was a Nazi scientist in one of these concentration
