Throughout the novel, Mark Baker takes on the persona as the narrator which allows him to help readers follow his personal journey of understanding and knowledge through the fifty gates which are presented within the novel, where he attempts to comprehend his parent's journey of survival and experiences faced during the Holocaust. Mark Bakers use of first and third person as the narrator also allows readers to both observe and experience the atrocities of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of Mark Baker himself.
