In the story, the Germans have occupied Denmark and have rationed out food and items like sugar coffee, butter, cigarettes, fuel, leather, and electricity. Soon the Germans soldiers started to find Jews and deport them to extermination camps. Annemarie and her family, the Johansen. couldn't let that happen to the rosens. Annemarie's older sister, Lise, was killed by the german soldiers. The Johansen's didn't want the Rosen's to face the same fate Lise did. Annemarie and her family helped the Rosen escape to Sweden, where Jews were free. Annemarie and the Johansens went through many hardships for the Rosens. Annemarie and her family faced many encounters with the german soldiers. If Hitler were to redeem him character by pulling his troops back and ending the war, Annemarie's life would be different.
