Gary Oldman has been a part of another successful franchise, the Harry Potter series. He played the role of Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather. In his first film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which was considered to be the best one in the series because it was directed by Alfonso Cuaron, Oldman’s character was the main antagonist until it was revealed at the end of the film that he was actually one of the good ones. The chemistry between Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Gary Oldman was just too amazing to be unnoticed. Oldman was actually a miscast, since he didn't really resemble the character description in the book, but you can't simply imagine anyone else playing Sirius Black since he portrayed him absolutely fantastic. However, there is one other role that would totally make you wonder why he didn't win an Oscar, and that is his role in the film, Tinker Tailor Soldier …show more content…

There was a time, before sound was introduced to film and culture was hand picked for society, when stars were born and bred on the stage. Actors who grew an understanding of their craft by clocking in rehearsal hours, feeding off an audience during live performances, and praying to the right gods, were signed on for a starring role in a film: an advancement in their career. Today, the craft of acting and the medium in which an actor is showcased have changed landscapes and the up-and-coming “starving actor” is struggling for work. Casting for film has long been equated to having the right “look” and there seems to only be two ways to get your feet on a Broadway stage: insane talent and luck or celebrity status. Broadway’s marquees have historically been crowded by celebrity names that draw audiences and drive ticket prices up, and with recent seasons, it seems more impossible than ever to see a green name receive the top bill— raising concerns that big names are cast for profit and not artistic integrity.…

The article “Matt Damon’s ‘Adjustment’ - It’s ‘The Matrix’ With Heart” by Leah Rozen starts off by comparing Matt Damon (the actor for the main character in the film) to other men who are considered great actors such as Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford. The main argument for the article is that Matt Damon makes the movie what it is. Rozen states that, Damon possesses a “fundamental decency [. . . and an] ability to project it convincingly on screen.” The problem that I have with the article is the fact that Rozen discuss in great detail how great of an actor Damon is and what qualities he brings to the film.…

Having an underrepresented director may have facilitated more underrepresented characters being cast on screen in film, television, or digital series. Additionally, communities are aware of Hollywood views but are inactive in fighting the stereotypes. A study, “The Multicultural Economy by the University of Georgia”, notes that Latinos make up 25% of movie ticket sales and “command roughly $1 trillion in spending power.” This illustrates how Latinos are able to use their power and boycott the films that have negative stereotypes towards Latinos. The communities can look back at the 1922 Mexico boycott against Hollywood films.…

In the 1990’s where the film industry came to dominance, actors were cast to portray roles of racial minority characters conspicuously and blatantly. The concept of white washing, orientalism or cultural appropriation were not prompted into the minds of directors, actors, movie-goers or virtually anyone of the time yet. With this, there was barely or if any characters of colour being casted for roles that they were the basis of. This notion has since continued onto contemporary society today, however, audiences today are now realising the lack of authenticity in casting white actors in racially parallel roles. The idea of ‘white-washing’ that is defined as favouring white actors and casting them into a non-white role completely changes the structure of the character, and at times whole context, of the film.…

Hollywood has spent years making movies, attracting an audience and making profit from their projects, but if there’s one thing has that has been missing from Hollywood and that 's been complete diversity. Ever since Hollywood 's upbringing and even still today, the business has underplayed minority actors and actress. The start of 20th century film began with mocking African Americans with black face and playing them as immature and violent savages the majority of these films were to keep the memory of pre civil war fresh in people 's minds and to remind them of the “Good times.” Even with roles given to actual African Americans, they still degraded them, with roles of the Mammy, Loyal Butler and Servants. It was a signal to show…
