Bilbo Off Into The Abyss Stage

Register to read the introduction… The complicated riddles that Gollum threw at him put Bilbo into a mental state of a true hero. He used both his intelligence and knowledge to answer Gollum’s tricky riddles and then threw some back at Gollum himself. After all, the riddle war was basically a life or death situation. For Bilbo to fully adapt himself to the mindset of a hero he had to use everything he knew, including his memory, “Unfortunately for Gollum Bilbo had heard that sort of thing before: and the answer was all round him anyway. Dark! He said without even scratching his head or putting on his thinking cap” (Tolken 84). Bilbo had to use what he already knew and it resulted in him knowing the answer easily. A hero should be able to remember small, but vital details in order to outsmart their enemy. By putting himself into this mental state Bilbo was able to use this mind set for the rest of his journey including making his way out of the Misty Mountains. A hero cannot give up, they most focus on what has to be done and Bilbo acquired this mindset from the riddle war with Gollum. When the dwarves dropped Bilbo in the dreaded tunnels of the goblin-infested Misty Mountains they thought that they would never see him again. However, that assumption was quite wrong seeing as Bilbo made it out of the Misty Mountains alive and healthy. By doing so, Bilbo proved that he was no useless hobbit anymore. He also earned great respect from his companions, “The dwarves looked at him with quite a new respect, when he talked about dodging guards, jumping over Gollum, and squeezing through” (Tolken 104). Before this incident the dwarves had really doubted whether Bilbo was worth taking along, but Gandalf had convinced them to bring him. This was the time were the dwarves began to understand why Gandalf wanted to bring him and how useful he could be to follow through with their mission.
