Part 2: Although Thorin begins to show some heroic attributes, his real character is put into shadow but is ever present.
Para 3: Thorin finally shows his true colours and is taken by the dragon gold he fights only to protect his wealth, he reconciles everything only to protect his reputation and nothing else.

The best-selling book The Hobbit has a diverse set of characters, Gandalf, Bilbo, Smaug, Elven King and many more. One of the more intriguing characters, however, is often overlooked; Thorin Oken-shield. Thorin often displays heroic attributes as well as villainous tendencies. He is often painted in a dark light. Thorin works for his own gain and places others to do the 'dirty work', often placing the ones he loves in mortal danger.

Does this make him a hero? On page 246 Thorin tells Bilbo to go into the mountain to gather intelligence and burgle the treasure.
“Now is the time for esteemed Mr Baggins, who has proved himself I good companion on our long road, a hobbit full on courage and resource far exceeding his size, and if I may say so passed on good luke far exceeding the usual allowance – now is the time for him to perform the service for which he was included in our Company; now is the time for him to earn his Reward.”
Bilbo then says that he has done far more than he was contracted to do and is owed some reward and basically means that if he wanted to he wouldn’t have
