After one night of thinking, Bilbo decided to accompanied Gandolf and the dwarfs to the Misty Mountain. “Bilbo Baggins' journey is a metaphor for the individuation process, his quest a search for maturity and wholeness, and his adventures, symbolically detailed rites of maturation” (Matthews). “At the beginning of the tale, Bilbo's personality is out of balance and far from integrated. His, masculinity, or one may say his Tookish aggressiveness is being repressed so that he is clinging rather immaturely to a childish way of life” (Matthews). “In the earlier work, Tolkien is addressing children and dealing with a closely limited theme—growing up—telling about Bilbo's “birth” out of Bag End and his gradual initiation into full manhood” (Helms). Gandolf was a tall man around 6ft tall with a staff, grey beard, grey hat, and grey robe. Gandolf was the wisest of the group and would be giving people advice and insight while on there, journey. Unlike Bilbo Gandolf had a reason for helping Thorin Oakenshield take back him home and kingdom back from the dragon Smaug. Bilbo adventure gave him the chance to meet Thorin Oakenshield and his company of dwarfs.
