For example, one message in the book is to not judge a person. In the beginning of the book, all of the dwarves doubt Gandalf’s choice of Bilbo becoming the group’s burglar. However, as the story progresses, the characters learn that there is more to Bilbo than what meets the eye. Without him, the adventure would have been ruined and they would have not been able to reach The Lonely Mountain. Another message in The Hobbit is anyone can become a hero, not matter how strong or large. For example, in the story, Thorin says, “There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” Throughout the adventure, Bilbo heroically saves others by having a selfless personality and only caring about what truly matters most in the world. In this case, he does not care about his reward of gold, like the dwarves did, however, Bilbo focuses on the wellbeing of other people and ends up helping others because of this. Even though Bilbo is only a regular hobbit, he grows to be an amazing hero throughout the book. He may not be strong or huge, but he is extremely clever and smart. This makes Bilbo a fast thinker and good decision maker, which are important skills that came in handy during the
