2 Setting a) When does the story take place? How can you tell? The story took place 6000 years ago, I could not tell by reading the book ( I looked it up after I read the book because I was curious). When I was done with the book I thought it took place around 2000 years ago by reading the book because the story takes place mostly in open fields. But they do visit villages and cities quite often, that means that it involved some kind of civilization. a) Introduction: how do we meet the main characters and how do we get to know their circumstances? There is no tension yet. We meet the main characters quite soon into the book. Gandalf goes to Bilbo with the dwarves to discuss retaking the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. They need Bilbo because he is supposed to become the greatest burglar, Gandalf already thinks Bilbo is. Bilbo is called a lot of words that day like: “He looks more like a grocer than a Burglar”. Eventually he decides to come along for the journey. b) Initial Incident: what incident in the story is the starting-point of the dramatic action? Around page 87 Bilbo gets taken by Goblins. This is the first part with real tension. You can read how frightened Bilbo must be when he is split from his group (the dwarves and Gandalf). Bilbo can not see a thing and starts to wander through the cave he is in. He finds an elf blade made in Gondolin. This is also the place where we meet Gollum for the first
