The main character, Bilbo Baggins, is a very thoughtful little hobbit who takes many things into account while making a decision. In chapter one, thirteen dwarves and a wizard, Gandalf, ask Bilbo to travel on a journey with them. As the other people talk about maps and trails and horrid dragons, Bilbo is constantly thinking. Should he stay? Should he go? He thought about the treasure he would get if he lived through this voyage and also how exciting it would be to travel with the dwarves and Gandalf!
Tolkien shows in his book that he feels intelligence is much more important than physical strength. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who cannot fight and is not very strong. Even with these physical setbacks, he was chosen to come with Gandalf and the dwarves to fight Smaug. Bilbo was the ¨chosen one¨. Tolkien would not choose this character to be the lead if he thought physical strength was the more important than intelligence.
