The Hobbit Movie Vs Book

The Hobbit Movie’s thirst for action in the movie has sacrificed key parts of the true story. The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien, and movie by Peter Jackson begins with a peaceful Hobbit who is pulled out of his usual environment and called to an adventure. He is joined by Dwarves and a mentor, Gandalf, to reclaim the Dwarves gold long forgotten in a mountain protected by a dragon, Smaug. The differences in character are present in the chapter, Inside Information, where Bilbo has two encounters with Smaug, one being a life threatening event. Tolkien’s original portrayal of Bilbo’s courageous and heroic character playing the role as the primary leader as well as Smaug’s sinister and manipulative character have wildly been altered to much simpler …show more content…
These changes have resulted in a very different movie that is much less effective at telling the original story. In the novel Bilbo is displayed as a strong leader among the Dwarves, however, it is quite the opposite in the movie. This display of leadership can be taken from the book as, “‘Ponies take some catching, I believe, after a long start. And so do burglars,’ he added as a parting shot, as he darted back and fled the tunnel”(Tolkien 227). In this scene, Bilbo is the one who makes the escape from the great Smaug. He uses his riddles and his overall cleverness In order to distract Smaug, which allowed him to make his escape, while the dwarves cower in their tunnel. He also managed to accomplish this feat all by himself with no clue of what to expect of Smaug. This shows Bilbo as a leader, which is a great part of Bilbo’s changing characteristics. Bilbo is the definite …show more content…
We can see the real Smaug in the book as, ¨’A fourteenth share, I suppose, or something like it, those were the terms eh? But what about delivery? What about cartage? What about armed guards and trolls?’¨(Tolkien 225)We can see that Smaug is very witty, his words and assumptions make Bilbo question his whole journey and everything he’s done for the dwarves. He makes Bilbo very paranoid and confused, he gets filled with thoughts that he might just be a tool for the dwarves that will be long forgotten. He wants to get in Bilbo's head and make him turn on his friends, the dwarves. He only begins to appear fierce after Bilbo flees and he unleashes his fiery breath. In contrast, in the film, Smaug is much more of a powerful force than a smart trickster. Smaug is relentlessly unleashing his fire and attacking the dwarves. He does not have the same mental effect on Bilbo and is a much larger physical than a mental threat. Peter Jackson has most likely done this to add more action and to make the film more enjoyable, as this will pull more viewers than a talking scene. It is also harder to display Bilbo’s thoughts in a film than in a book. He has made this change to enhance the visual appeal of the film, however, it has taken out the true, smart, trickster Smaug that is displayed in the true

In the beginning of the story Bilbo was someone who was easily frightened but now he has grown much bolder in his adventure especially when he confronts Gollum. For example in chapter two when the trolls have taken the dwarves hostage Bilbo doesn’t try to help him for he is too scared. This is shown when he tells Thorin, “‘It’s trolls!’ said Bilbo from behind a tree. They had forgotten all about him” (Tolkien 39). The quote demonstrates Bilbo’s timidity as he pushes the responsibility of saving the dwarves to Thorin.…

He highlights the important aspects of himself, by including the number of deaths he’s caused and how superior he is as compared to others. Epizeuxis was provided for vehemence in line 32 as Smaug says “Now I am old and strong, strong, strong.” The author also includes a metaphor and simile in Line 33 when Smaug is saying “My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords… and my breath death,” to follow up on how he views himself as having much power. He is known to have a reputation of having enemies because of the many lives he’s taken and the damage he’s caused to many people. Therefore, the simile “the light of his eyes lit the hall from floor to ceiling like scarlet lightning” in Line 27 implies just how appalled he was because Bilbo took the chance to go against him although he was known to have such a heavy…

Another one of bilbo’s important skills is intelligence. Intelligence is something that everyone has, but in Bilbo’s case he is more intelligent than he thinks. Throughout the book Bilbo has done things that I wouldn’t have even thought to do. He had to come up with different ways to save the dwarves many times. For example, when Bilbo had to save the dwarves from the wood-elves they had spent days in that palace trapped eating food they didn’t want, and they were being forced to tell them something that they didn’t want to say.…

In the beginning of the book, Tolkien uses vivid descriptions to give us a view inside of Bilbo's life, and to briefly show readers his hobbit hole located in Middle Earth. Tolkien writes in page 1, “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit... It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” His hole is symbolized as a place of comfort, similar to our comfort in our own homes. Most people in life search for power, sometimes all people want is money, with that comes greed.…

“This of course is the way to talk to dragons, if you don’t want to reveal your proper name (which is wise), and don’t want to infuriate them by a flat refusal (which is also very wise). No dragon can resist the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time trying to understand it.” (Tolkien 259) When Bilbo is facing Smaug all on his own, he makes the very clever decision of speaking to the dragon in riddles. While Smaug is wasting his time trying to understand what Bilbo is talking about, he plans his escape. Smaug attempts to distract Bilbo by growing suspicion against the dwarves, but Bilbo realizes what he is doing and continues to focus on his escape.…
