Every day, all around the world, people are getting involved in car accidents. Although it may not be a rare occurrence anymore, the fact of the matter is that driving under the influence has become a bigger problem in our society. The different laws each state holds for these incidents don’t all measure up to each other, so in order to make every place in the United States equal, the Federal Government should standardize DUI laws. “Every day, 28 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 53 minutes” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). One death every 53 minutes, let us put that in perspective. Imagine going to the movie theater to see the Hobbit, a three-hour-long movie. During the run time of the movie, three people would have dropped dead in the theater, and one more is about halfway there to death. How many times has there been a late night news segment involving a fatal crash, where the person driving under the influence came out alive, yet the innocent involved was either in critical care or died? “In 2014, 9,967 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States” (CDC). That death count is almost the entire population of Sedona, which is astounding to think that so many people lost their lives over such a stupid and preventable decision. There is no reason to be driving under the influence, especially with the resources that are available to the masses today with Uber and Lyft. It is not only adults who are at risk, though, it is children as well, seeing as how “of the 209 child passengers ages 14 and younger who died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2014, over half (116) were riding in the vehicle with the alcohol-impaired driver” (CDC). They can not control what is happening, nor can they drive themselves. This is someone else’s life in your hands, there is no reason to play with
