In this forest it’s dark and you can’t tell whether it’s day or night. Everyone wants to leave this forest but they can’t find a exit. Gandalf before leaving the group warns them to not stray off the path. At night the group sees lights and leave the path. They see elves sitting around a fire just feasting. Once the elves know they are being watched the lights go off and the group becomes separated since they can’t see anything. Bilbo falls asleep and is awoken to a giant spider approaching him. He grabs his swords and kills the spider on his own. This is the first time Bilbo does anything on his own without Gandalf stepping in and helping him"Somehow the killing of a giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark without the help of a wizard or the dwarves or anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. It is here where Bilbo is fully developed into a new character. Thorin picks Bilbo to be the burglar and go into Smaug’s chamber. Smaug is peacefully sleeping and Bilbo puts on the ring so he becomes invisible. Once Bilbo sees the dragon he becomes afraid but becomes brave and steals a golden cup. Although he makes it out unharmed the dragon notices once he awakens one of his treasures are missing. He is outraged and begins to cause chaos in the mountains. Smaug sees the ponies and kills them while the group goes into hiding. Bilbo has a new attitude and outlook and gets the nerve to go see the dragon while knowing he could die.
