The Hobbit is a fictional fantasy story written by J. R. R. Tolkien. This story follows a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. A Hobbit is a very short humanoid creature that usually does not take part in the wild journeys that other creatures take part in. However, Gandalf, a great wizard, calls upon Bilbo to assist a group of Dwarves reclaim their mountain from a dragon. Originally Bilbo does not enjoy adventures, but as the story goes on Bilbo develops into a hero as he defies the stereotypical lifestyle associated with his family, discovers the forces that motivate his actions, and works to unite the different races of Middle-Earth. At first Bilbo seems to have a selfish and conceited mindset towards the adventure. He is only interested in joining the company of dwarves because he wishes to explore the world. Bilbo is very pessimistic about the journey becauses he is not confident in his abilities and he does not seemed interested in helping the company succeed. Gandalf is the one that has to instill the confidence in Bilbo and force him to go on the journey. Bilbo maintains this pessimistic mindset until he stumbles upon a ring of power. This ring allows the wearer to become invisible and this gives Bilbo a great confidence boost. He is the one in possession of this great ring so he realizes that he should use it’s power for the greater good of Middle-Earth. BIlbo says “Go back? No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? That's the only thing to do! On we go!” (63). This shows that Bilbo is excited and motivated, this is the turning point for Bilbo on the journey because after this point he appears extremely motivated to do his part in saving and uniting the different races of his World. Eventually Bilbo’s company of dwarves becomes corrupt with power, so he has to betray his company for the good of everyone. Different races such as humans, elves, hobbits, and dwarves all lived in segregated areas and they rarely came in contact with each other. Bilbo helped the dwarves reclaim their treasure which was located in a mountain, but after this the dwarves became very selfish. The elves also assisted the dwarves but the dwarves refused to share any of their treasure with the elves. This caused a standoff between the dwarven and elven races that would eventually lead to war that involved every sort of creature in MIddle-Earth. Bilbo could have easily been greedy and sided with the dwarves to try and secure the most treasure for him, but instead he decided to work with the elves and other creatures to unite everyone. Although he was not respected by any of the creatures he worked with Bilbo still did the selfless thing by choosing to unite everyone instead of taking the easy way out and being greedy, and that is why Bilbo is the hero of this story. In conclusion, The Hobbit is a great novel that demonstrates how an average citizen can still be viewed as a hero. Bilbo starts as an average person living a reclusive life but he develops into a hero by defying the stereotypes associated with his family lifestyle, discovering his own true motivations, and uniting the different creatures of Middle-Earth for a great
