The Hobbit Hero's Journey

“The Hobbit” is a story written by J.R.R. Tolkien in which a journey filled with whimsical creatures and characters takes place. It’s all about exploring vast lands on a quest for gold and treasure and singing songs of cheer and joy along the way. Each character in the story has their own unique charisma and archetypal role to fulfill. Immediately, as the first chapter begins, the main protagonist is introduced into the story, and, seeing how he is the hero of the story, he will logically be one of the most unique and important characters. In a hero’s journey, such as this one, the hero must refuse the call to action at first, then accept the guidance of the mentor, and finally decide to go on the quest. Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit and hero of the story, does all three of those in the story. An instance of Gandalf providing insight on the journey ahead can be found in the book when he announces, “I went on to spy out our road. It will soon become dangerous and difficult.” (Tolkien, The Hobbit, pg.#50) Here, Gandalf has given insight on the danger ahead, and he does not stop there in proving that he is indeed the mentor. “The Hobbit” states, “Now Gandalf led the way. ‘We must not miss the road, or we shall be done for,’ he said.” (Tolkien, The Hobbit, pg.#52) That was an example of Gandalf guiding the hero through parts of the journey.
