The Hobbit Hero's Journey Essay

Supergirl, Captain America, Wonder Woman, Iron man, The Flash, Spiderman; these might be the first thing that come to mind when someone says “hero.” But, not all heroes wear capes or have special powers. Ordinary people leave their homes or comfort zones to travel the unknown and possibly defeat a great evil. Thus, begins a heroic journey. There’s (usually) a character that helps the hero on the journey, the hero will meet allies and mentors, cross obstacles, and in the end, change who they were or what they thought from the beginning of the story. Sometimes, heroic journeys are easy to apply to our own lives. Not exactly in the sense of fighting an evil, but meeting new people, crossing obstacles in life, and changing.

Bilbo, the main character of the story, is a highly respected hobbit because of his family and the fact that he never been on an adventure (hobbits never leave), until now. He is chosen to become a thief and leaves his very comfortable hobbit hole to join thirteen people on an adventure. In the beginning, the hobbit is constantly getting the group in trouble and they start doubting him. Later on the journey, however, he becomes more “heroic” and starts getting his party and himself out of danger. An example of this would be the time when everyone fell asleep and the dwarves were captured by the spiders in the forest, Bilbo used his ring to become invisible and distract the spiders to free the dwarves. Taking these actions, he risked his life for the safety of others. The bunch is constantly thinking of their journey ahead, knowing they need to be prepared for anything. Although, the adventure was long and hard, some things turned out better in the end. Bilbo became a different hobbit, from running into dangers to the loss of a partner and friend, the experience shaped him to be a bit more confident and he has stories to share of …show more content…
He becomes less like the shy, scared and lonely hobbit and more brave, heroic and risk-taking. This is shown numerous times. In the beginning of the adventure, he got himself in trouble with the trolls, Bert, William, and Tom. The dwarves had to go search for him, but ended up getting caught as well. It was Gandalf who outsmarted the trolls and saved his companions. Morrigan becomes more confident as well. As she leaves the Crow Manor, she is terrified when she finds out the Hunt was after her (and she has the right to be), and Jupiter, who at the time was a complete stranger, asked her to trust him before they jumped out a window together. However, as she lives in the Deucalion, she gets to shape more into her true self. The person she couldn’t be because of how isolated everyone made her. She was able to make more sarcastic comments, more jokes; she wasn’t forced to do
