The Hobbit Hero's Journey Analysis

Think about any time that a television show runs, and the scene changes. This idea can become greatly compared with The Hobbit. The story moves on to a different part almost without warning. Even though it moves quickly, the story still manages to connect with a hero’s journey. Throughout The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien uses a hero’s journey to show the different stages, the departure, the initiation, and the return. In chapter one, this quote greatly represents the departure: “Let's have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you.” This quote shows how Gandalf, the wizard, was choosing Bilbo of all creatures, to go on a grand adventure. That moment displays a great calling for Biblo. This calling was something much bigger than larger than Bilbo had ever imagined. It brought out the “Tookish” side of him, urging him to go on this adventure. However he wanted this adventure badly, along the way, he felt he was in over his head. …show more content…
His tests in order included: The trolls, the goblins, Gollum, the spiders, and the wood elves. Bilbo’s allies to help him pass these tests included: the dwarves, the elves from Rivendell, Beorn, The Eagles, and Gandalf. Eventually, the wood elves, as well as the Lake Men, became allies too. Bilbo’s enemies were proven to be the spiders, trolls, goblins, Gollum, and, of course, Smaug. Smaug is proven as an enemy in chapter twelve: “Smaug came hurtling in from the North, licking the mountain-sides with flame, beating his great wings with a noise like a roaring wind. His hot breath shriveled the grass before the door and drove in through the crack they had left and scorched them as they hid. Flickering fires leaped up and black rock-shadows danced.
