Does the World Need a Hero? Gandalf, a character in J.R.R Tolkien’s book The Hobbit, once said, “Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay… small acts of kindness and love.” Acts of love and kindness, make ordinary people the heroes of the world. The definition of a hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Is love not the noblest quality of all. The world depends on these heroes, they give balance to the world, they give an ideal for people strive toward, and allow ordinary people to stand up for what is right. Ever since the dawn of creation, there has been a constant struggle in the minds of men. To do what is best for the world or to do what is best for ourselves. It all comes down to one simple question. Do we follow sin and selfishness, or purity and righteousness? Without the heroes in the world, human tendency is to do what is best for ourselves. A hero knows that well. Risking one’s life is the ultimate example of heroism. But why should people do good? Many believe that because the happiness and suffering of other human beings matters so much to most of us that we should seek, whenever possible, to increase their happiness and decrease their suffering. A hero will do just that. It is an ideal to strive towards with all our heart. The world needs people that will risk everything to decrease human suffering, at any level. To sustain from evil is to sustain from the deep human nature that is within all humans. A hero is someone who takes on that impossible
