Bilbo Transformation In The Hobbit

People metamorphose into different characters after experiencing an adventure. In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist, grew and developed a great deal spiritually throughout his adventures. He changes from an insecure hobbit who avoids adventures to a brave hobbit who finds courage, from a foolish hobbit who is careless to an observant one who is conscious of surroundings, and from an useless member to becoming a leader and taking over. These new characteristics Bilbo develops shows the change from his weak side to the strong side throughout The Hobbit. Bilbo transmutes from avoiding adventures to finding courage. When the weak Bilbo refuses to go on an adventure, he responds to Gandalf, ‘“ Sorry! I don’t want any adventures, thank you, not today”’(Tolkien 6). At the beginning, when Gandalf asks him to go on the adventure, he refuses because he likes the relaxed life. This demonstrates Bilbo’s sheltered and insecure side. He does not like adventure, and he barely leaves his little hobbit hole. Bilbo does not ever think about exciting journeys when he is sitting in his hobbit hole having six meals a day. Bilbo is scared and uncomfortable when Gandalf asks him to go on the adventure and be their burglar, so he responds to the dwarves, ‘“ As soon as I saw your funny faces on the door-step, I …show more content…
These experiences develop and mature Bilbo spiritually with the help of the ring and Gandalf. He changes from an insecure, foolish hobbit who follows his group all the time to a brave and skilled leader of the dwarves. After Mr.Baggins triumphantly returns, he is wiser and stronger mentally.
