He wanted us to feel more attached to other characters that were important, aside from Bilbo, Gandalf and Thorin. We know that there are other important characters that are within the book such as, prince and foreshadowed princess of the Elves, named Legolas and Tauriel. Bilbo's 1st person perspective does not lead them to be as significant as significant as they are in the movie but the audience experiences them helping to save the dwarfs as they escape down the river. Legolas did not want to help the escape of the dwarfs but was dragged into the fight by Tauriel. Tauriel was in the fight because she had developed or had a developing relationship with Kili, another character that was irrelevant throughout the book but significant in the film. The relationship between Legolas and Tauriel was by far the most noticeable subplot or added portion of the film. Another very important character throughout the movie.
So now that we have looked at many examples on how the film is different from the book, we can now determine which one to follow more.
