“Oh God! It gets worse!”

Bilbo croaked, “The smell? Yes, dragon smells absolutely foul."

Bilbo's nostrils flared.

"Worse than troll?"

"Though troll is foul, I am afraid there is simply no contest between the two."

The small jest distracted from Bilbo's impending fate. But the merriment was short-lived. Here was the brink. Beyond the treasury and a monstrous drake sleeping on a bed of gold. Any bravery you had perhaps had fled into your belly and hid there.

“This is as far as I can go, Bilbo.”

“Thank you for accompanying me this far,” Bilbo whispered.

Your heart pounded the bars of its cell in protestation at the very idea.

"I was hoping I could give you a hug. So, that our parting ends on a light note. But, if you would rather not that's all right too..."

You felt like a great fool, stalling your friends departure, and carrying on. Your words trailed off into unintelligible mutters and finally into a sigh of resignation.

Perhaps seemingly unending amounts of good humor and patience were common among hobbits or perhaps it was a trait that was unique to Bilbo. No matter which, Bilbo replied, “Well, come here then."

You surged forward and pulled Bilbo to your breast in a fierce embrace. Bilbo smelled of dirt and sweat and he was warm and stout in your arms; you committed it to your memory.

Soft sincerity planted in every word you said, “You are a good person, Bilbo. And a truly brave man."

In this moment of undecipherable feeling, you stole forward and kissed Bilbo. Nothing passionate, it could have been acceptable to give your mother for how quick and uncommitted it was. Stumbling back you panted through your blush. Would you dare? Yes. Bilbo's face displayed a rare collage of muddled expression. Your eyes flickered from his face towards the stairs.
