Animism is the belief in the spirit world and all living things are interconnected, The same reason why they blame a soul stealing creature for all of their illnessses and misfortunes. They don't have any educated explanations to why things happened. Compared to American doctors that have a strong sense in their education. These doctors knows the causes, symptoms, effects and treatments various diseases, but their education, mostly their cultural knowledge, is limited to our culture, the American culture. The Hmong on the other hand have a completely different understanding of life, and how it works. They didn't just make up some elaborate stories to rebel against the methods we us in western medication. Most Hmong believed that the body contains a finite amount of blood and it is unreplishable, so taking one's blood can be dangerous or fatal especially for kids. Surgery is a taboo for the reason that disfiguring or cutting, or losing any body parts damages the person and become physically ill and incomplete in his next lifetime , and that autopsies could prevent souls from being reincarnated and believe that the souls take revenge on the living.
