The History of Shit by Dominique Laporte explores the function of waste throughout history as it plays roles in the development of language, technological development, and government laws. Correspondingly, the silent film Modern Times, by Charlie Chaplin, explores the consequences of the growth and use of new technologies in the industrial sphere and critiques the effect that it has on communication. Both texts reference industrialization as Chaplin analyzes the hierarchical structure of employees in a factory and uses that to highlight the complications brought to language, whereas Laporte refers to the processing of waste into financial means showing how society is always finding solutions that are applicable in terms of capitalism. In the History of Shit, waste can only be useful after it has gone through processes to become purified, similarly, in Modern Times, language is only understood by the audience when in a technological context, either passing through a machine or through a machinery simulation.
