The Mexican Revolution began on November 20, 1910, after liberals and intellectuals began to challenge the dictator Porfirio Diaz. He had been in power for 34 years violating the principles and ideals of the Mexican Constitution of 1857. Two great men led the revolution, Francisco “Pancho” Villa and Emiliano Zapata, and till this day remain key cultural and historical symbols in history. The premise for the revolution grew out the basic belief that wealthy landowners could not continue la encomienda, a form of slave labor. Farmers felt that those who actually worked the land should extract its wealth through their labor. The revolution lasted about 7 years and officially ended with the signing of the Constitution of Mexico in 1917, however some issues still remained and the violence continued long into the next decade (The Mexican Revolution, …show more content…
Mexico is most known for their folk arts and crafts called artesania. Artesania is made from clay, wood, metal, stones, and even plants. Mexican folk art is famous for their bold colors and elegant decorative details. Examples of this type of art is seen during the Day of the Dead celebrations. Sugar skulls are also crafted during these celebrations to honor the departed. They are adorned with the departed souls name and are made to be colorful, sparkly, and inspire joy in children. (Fine Mexican Art, n.d.). Mexican dance is a mix of Indigenous, European, and African influences. There are many types of dances but overall they are thoroughly woven pieces of art that blend the rhythm of the music, the vivid colors of the clothing, and dancing accessories into a graceful performance (Mexican Dance, n.d.). Mexico is also known for their colorful Mariachi band music. Mariachi is a folk style of music traditionally wearing a charro suit and often tell a story of pride, romance and poverty (The Mexican Culture, n.d.). A charro suit can be of many colors, but traditionally it consists of a black sombrero (hat), suit with silver buttons, bow tie (red, black, or white), suede or leather boots, white shirt and gun belt of the same color as the boots (Martinon-Torres, n.d.).
Culture is defined by the people, customs, religion, and traditions
