Jeju or Cheju Island is a one of the biggest island in South Korea and very famous for their beautiful scenery, food, and the unique culture. However, under the beautiful scenes there’s a dark history - Jeju April Uprising. It is one of the most brutal and bloodiest history in South Korea, but yet history repeats itself and currently Gangjeong villagers are going through a similar violence.
Jeju April Uprising is also called Jeju Massacre due to the number of deaths and violence Jeju civilians went through. In addition to food stamps, the navy blocked off all other trail of food and other supplements. This not only stopped supply for the guerrilla but also for Jeju civilians, who had no idea what communism was or why they had to follow orders from foreigners even after liberation. In addition, the soldiers rounded up all civilians who lived on the edges of the island and surrounded them up to the middle of the island burning all resources : homes, lands, and farms. Once rounded up whomever was ‘suspected’ of being a leftist by the soldiers were either brutally tortured or killed. The soldiers were strong rightist, gangs that supported the movement, or American soldiers whom all practiced extreme brutality. ‘Suspected’ civilians were shot with their hands tied in the back than shot one by one, heads would be cut off and stuck to a bamboo stick for display, or bodies would be dumped in public with neither mercy nor morals.
