ISIS is a terrorist organization that goes by the names ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), IS (Islamic State), or most commonly, ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). The group resides in the Middle East, more specifically, in Western Iraq and Syria. ISIS’s main goal is to “establish a massive state ruled by strict Islamic law” (Brown, “5 Things to Know about ISIS” 8). The origins of ISIS can be traced to the late 1990’s, where it was formed as a jihadist faction …show more content…
The main mission is to restore a caliphate (an Islamic province or state ruled by a successor of the prophet Mohammad) in the Middle East. The biggest caliphate reached across from modern-day Pakistan to Spain in the 9th century, including North Africa (Brown, “5 Things to Know about ISIS” 9). So far, they have control over many areas in Iraq and Syria, and up to current time, militant groups from several countries have pledged allegiance to them, including groups from Algeria, Afghanistan, Jordan, Chechnya, Libya, and the Philippines. Once pledged, they are considered provinces of ISIS. The benefit that provinces give to ISIS is that they make the band of subversives look powerful and attractive. It also gives ISIS strategic geographic reach (Byman 81). The terrorist faction also expects all Muslim countries to become part of their caliphate and pledge allegiance to their cause (Kaltenthaler; Brown, “5 Things to Know about ISIS” 9). According to Byman, “the provinces pose a serious threat to Western interests: they enable ISIS to expand its reach and make local groups more deadly in their regional conflicts” (77). ISIS also wants to basically convert the world to Sunni Islam. They see members of the Shia sect of Islam as infidels, or enemies against their religion, and they force other religious minorities to change their religion to Islam or be murdered, or even be sold into slavery. An additional objective ISIS has is to wage a holy war on the West, more specifically the United States. Shia-led governments, such as Iraq and Syria, are also included in their crusade. Robert Taylor of the University of Texas adds “the West is corrupt. It's a colonizer. It's [taken over] much of the Arab power in the Middle East." (Brown, “5 Things to Know about ISIS” 10). A possible other motive the faction might have for holy war against the U.S. is the fact that our country is a primarily Christian country. Lastly, the final
