The blue stripes on the top and bottom of the flag represent the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The white stripe in the middle symbolizes peace. The three branches of government and equality are represented through the triangle inside the coat of arms. The triangle contains symbols of liberty or the ideals of people and peace. These symbols include the hat on the pole, the golden rays around the hat, and the rainbow. The five volcanoes represent the five original member states of the United Provinces of Central America. The date El Salvador became independent from Spain, September 15 1821, can be found also in the triangle. Right underneath the triangle is the national motto of El Salvador.
