The History of Basketball
Basketball is a simple but competitive sport composed of five players per team with competing goals of shooting a basketball through a hoop. James A. Naismith first invented the game of basketball in 189 at a YMCA gymnasium in Spring Field, Massachusetts, where he was a physical education teacher. The first game was played with a soccer ball, two peach baskets for goals, and nine people per team. Naismith brainstormed the 13 original rules of basketball. The rules described, among of other aspects, the method of moving the ball, what resulted in a foul, the appointment of a referee, and how the game would be divided into two, fifteen-minute halves with a resting period in between. Although there were set rules for the game of basketball some have been modified and are in effect “till this day. In the early years the number of players on a team varied according to the size of the class and size of the playing field (Augustyn, 2011, pg. 2). In 1894 the teams started with 5 players on each side, then the number rose to seven and to nine all based on the size of the court. In 1897 only five members per team became a formal rule. From 1891 through 1893, a soccer ball was used to play basketball, until the first ball was manufactured in 1894. Naismith was seeking a team sport that limited physical contact but a lot of running jumping, shooting and hand-eye coordination to handle a ball (Basketball, 2001, para. 4).
