In today’s society there are many groups of people that would consider “deviant.” Some groups are more extreme than others, and some are more common than others. One group that is very common and impacts society in an extreme manor is the homeless. The word “homeless” has many different definitions. Generally speaking, a homeless person can be defined as someone who has no designated places to call home on a daily basis. To better understand today’s homeless people, one needs to know the history, causes and statists of homelessness.

In 1920, natural disasters had displaced over 1.3 million people. The great depression left nearly 11 million unemployed. In the mid to late 1900’s America starts to rebuild itself; homeless shelters and programs were on the rise. In history very few statistics and demographics were recorded regarding homeless people; today thousands of documents are available pertaining to homelessness; including the who’s what’s when’s and where’s.
Due to the lack of accurate measurement methods, there is no definite number of homeless people in America today. However the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty estimated that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2007). 36,000 of those homeless people reside in Florida. One of the biggest causes here in Pinellas County is lack of affordable housing. The average hourly wage for home renters in Pinellas County is $14.32, while an average 2 bedroom housing wage exceeds that by $5.15 (nationalhomeless.org). Families in poverty must priorities what they pay for. Many times when considering health insurance, child care, transportation, food, and housing, people in poverty to choose lose their homes first.
