This is one reason why the historical shift of “postmodernism” in the early 20th century provided a more internalized historical shift that involved individual creativity and self-formation, which did not have to rely on the larger community. In this manner, the individual possessed the power via the “psychodynamic self” to define self, which was another major historical shift that defied Hegel’s idea of a collective identity (p.20). the corporatist branding of minority politics on the American university campus had begun to devolve into a “narcissistic” style of political representation, which di d not have a broader activism that extended outside of generic issues as presented in the gay community, racial identity, and other minority issues. Klein (2000) defines the problem of this form of narcissistic form of corporatized and isolationist activism as a part of the problem of representation in the community. More so pop culture is blamed for the artificiality of these political forms of representation that were co-opted by corporations (Klein, 2000, p.109). This form of media manipulation was part of a larger problem involving the branding of political culture, which slowly devolved the impact of direct community action by students and activists in the community. This form of “narcissism” in the 1990s helped to expose many political issues of representation, but the intervention of pop culture and the glamourizing effect of activism as disempowered by American corporatism.
