Forgetting a joke when you are in an opportune moment or losing a learned fact when you need it for a pop quiz you are currently taking. It just maybe the worst to forget knowledge but always remember someone has it worst. How about losing information, or just not remembering anything new anymore for the rest of your life. That is partially what it is like to have a defective hippocampus. The human hippocampus is surgically removed to help patients that have severe brain damage such as seizures and anterograde amnesia. The hippocampus seems to be part of the brain that deals with memory. Thats correct it does not only deal with the knowledge containment but on forming and sorting memories too. …show more content…
It is a neurological process that changes short-term memory into long-term memory. Short term memories are only kept for 20 to 30 seconds. That is done so that information can be brought back and used for later. Short-term memories have to be transferred into long-term memories. A long-term memory is information that is stored or an extended period of time. The consolidation process is a change in which the synapses ( the small gap at the end of a neuron that allows information to pass from one neuron to the next; synapses are found where nerve cells connect with muscles and glands); (Cherry). It has been made stronger by the result of signals being passed by two neurons faster and more frequently. This plays a great role in the learning process and the memory process. When the two neurons are active at the same time they become likely to fire again together. After the two neurons fire repetitively at the same time they become sensitized. That means they respond to the Stimuli. As new experiences are created in a person 's life their brain makes more connections between the two neurons, so that the brain can have more memories. Eventually the brain can rearrange itself and get rid of all the old connections. When braking the connections between two neurons it weeds out the memory. By recalling information the neutral networks are then strengthened. Influences on the memory consolidation process to begin synaptic level this process can happen in a long or short period of time from days to years. The memories in a brain are spread out. To access information the brain makes a neutral map so that the memory can be retrieved when a person needs it. If a human brain has a hard time retrieving information it is theoretically stated sleep will help the consolidation of episodic and emotional content into a long term memory
