The Hill is the Italian community of St. Louis; it has the largest Italian American majority in St. Louis. The population is approximately 2,500 people including myself. It is home to many Italian businesses, mostly restaurant, bakeries, and delis. The name comes from the fact that the highest point of the city is in the Hill’s borders. The Hill community has played a crucial role in my development as a person.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s Italians started to settle the area because of the promising jobs opportunities that the area had to offer. The jobs were mainly in factories and clay mines. The immigrants quickly influenced the increase of Roman Catholic church in St. Louis, St. Ambrose Church was built and became the center of the

The two most known athletes that called the Hill home were baseball legends Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola. They were neighbors who famously grew up together playing ball in field which now called Berra Park, the park of the Hill by coincidence named after Louis Berra who had no relations to Yogi Berra. The street that Yogi Berra’s house lays on is now known as “Hall of Fame Place”. His house is on the next block of my street, starting at 5 am that morning people started flocking to the Hill to pay respects to the baseball great after he passed in September of 2015. This was slightly annoying for me because my street was constantly backed up and people would stop to ask directions to his house but I quickly got over it as I saw the influence that he has left behind. This was also the case for Yogi Berra’s neighbor, another baseball legend for both his playing and television career, Joe Garagiola when he passed away in March of

There are lots of things involved in making small tows warm and welcoming, and some of which are harder to work around than others. Considering Alpena, we have lots of closed doors, and most of businesses are out of walking distance from each other. The weather up here is also very unpredictable ad abnormal but one thing we need to increase that will allow us to become a more lively and eccentric town, is our number of small businesses, we need a bigger supply of small businesses that are in walking distance from each other.…

The definition of media is any format or platform that carries, presents, or communicates information, so everything surrounding us would be considered media. A certain type of media that I will relate back to sociology would be a television show titled One Tree Hill. The show is based around different high school kids and how the love of basketball and the love of the players makes them come together. The show itself, is centered around two half-brothers and how one is considered an outcast, Lucas and the other is considered royalty, Nathan. When Lucas makes the basketball team, Nathan isn't exactly his greatest fan in fact Lucas goes through a round of bullying before he is finally accepted onto the team.…

When I think of my Italian heritage, the first place that comes to mind is the Ninth Street Italian Market in Philadelphia. I think of all the different family owned butcher shops, bakeries, specialty cheese shops, restaurants and more that have been in business longer than I have been alive. At one time, this outdoor market was an urban enclave in which mainly Italian and Jewish immigrants worked, lived and raised their families. Today, while this outdoor market has become diversified with people and businesses of many different ethnic backgrounds, the sense of pride remains just the same. In this paper I will talk about the history and location of the Italian Market, as well as the area as an urban enclave.…

Mazzetti’s used to place ads in the local newspaper, the Pacifica Tribune, but as the age of digital media is in full swing, the bakery has abandoned this strategy. Aside from print advertisements, Mazzetti’s has relied heavily on word of mouth marketing and has helped to create a presence in the community by donating to or helping out with various fundraisers and events. Each year the bakery donates financially to, as well as caters the breakfast and dinner, for the “Devil’s Slide Ride” which supports PARCA, an organization that works to help improve the lives of the developmentally-disabled and their families in San Mateo County. Additionally, Mazzetti’s has helped with many school fundraisers and sponsored local sports teams, furthering their visibility and giving back to the community.…
