Soccer Narrative Essay

I was no longer playing for myself, I was playing for a coach who was not easy to please. The moment I stopped playing for myself was the moment I realized that if I didn’t enjoy what I was doing, I shouldn’t be doing it. The Gaffney High School girls’ soccer team had lost their eighth consecutive game and I was a part of that team. That night we traveled to Rock Hill High School. The entire first half of the soccer game was excruciating. Rock Hill is one of the best soccer teams in South Carolina. The first forty minutes consisted of goal after goal by the other team. All of a sudden, coach starts yelling and I jumped from where I was sitting, startled and already afraid of what was to come. “I have never, in my entire life, seen a soccer game this bad. It looks like Gaffney set out a bunch of six year olds that have never even touched a soccer ball.” I couldn’t listen anymore. I was tired of being talked down to and being told that I suck at the one sport that I had spent my whole life playing. I looked around at the rest of my team, some with tears pooling in their eyes while others looked drained, with no energy left to even finish the rest of the

Alana let's go, it's time to stretch, " said Danielle, one of my teammates. I ran to where the rest of my team was, as I ran I could hear the sound of my soccer cleats sticking to the mud. I got into line, we stretched in two lines. " OKAY GUYS LETS DO THIS," said Taylor, she was the leader of our team because she was a very confident and bold person which my coach John liked. We started to stretch, we had a routine that we always did.…

Tears stumbled down my face and blended with the snow-covered turf. I made my way out to the center of the field. The field revolved around me as I attempted to breathe in the smells of the game and remember the sights and sounds of my last soccer game. Kempton Schneider walked up to me with tears imprinting streaks down his face. “It’s beautiful isn’t it”, Kempton whispered with a depressing stutter.…

We began to train even harder, disregarding the swelling on our knees and ankles, tasting the conviction and persistence in the training court shared by all. Meanwhile, I watched professional soccer games, read coaching books every night and observed the training of our rival team, and tried to think of a good strategy. My research drove me to play a direct counter attack style to win the games. In the final team meeting before the big game, I presented my strategy, and convinced them that every individual’s potential is indeed unlimited, especially when they focus on their goal and work together. If the whole team believed in each other and fight to the end, we could change a failure to a victory.…

Soccer was something I invested 11 years of my life into, and quitting abruptly put my parents into a frenzy. To my parents this was just another stupid decision, but to me it was the start of my independence. From this day on I began to make choices because I personally wanted to. I stopped caring what my parents thought of me and promised myself to do more for myself. I began excelling in school, not because of the pressure my parents put on me to succeed, but because I knew I could do better if I applied myself.…

The sport in its entirety is what I came to love. So, I’m still following a soccer-centric path as much as possible. Along the way, I guess my passion wasn’t seen by only me, later giving me the opportunity to become my school’s varsity team’s videographer, something I’ll never be able to fully express my gratitude for. It’s gotten to the point where bringing up the sport to friends is just verbal diarrhea for them. Yet, they’ve never gotten fed up, and that’s just it.…
