High School Dropouts: Problems and Solutions The world would be a very different place if no one received a high school diploma or if there was a high percentage of dropouts. People would not have opportunities for advancements in employment, everyone would work the same type of job, and people would have the same level of education. Today, for many students, the pressures of school are too much to handle and the only option is for them to leave school. Other students have problems at home in which they may have to leave school to help support their family or they do not come from a stable home environment. School systems may not have the manpower to have a mentor or counselor for every student or even have more than one counselor for every school. This can cause a decrease in involvement of a student’s academic career and this can also cause a student to feel unsupported, insignificant, and useless within their school. Students feel they do not have as much significance in the classroom as other students. These students may become detached within the classroom because they feel their thoughts and opinions do not matter. “The presence or absence of these connections drove many of the choices that young people made, including about school attendance and completion” (Don’t Call). If students do not have an adequate support system they may not have the motivation to do well in school. A lack of support can lead to an increased risk of students wishing to drop out of school. This gives the school systems a bad reputation and they usually have to take the blame for students dropping out due to flaws on their …show more content…
“As your students strive to reach their goals, help them along the way” (How to). This can mean encouraging students to complete assignments and being a form of support system for them. Increased support and mentors from school systems can help a student increase their chances of graduation and going onto college or into the workforce. Support systems can include counselors, mentors, teachers, and even administrators. These people understand how hard it is to be a student and trying to be successful with their education. “Mentoring is a one-to-one caring, supportive relationship between a mentor and a mentee that is based on trust” (15 Effective). This type of relationship can assist a student in getting the type of attention they need to cope with their problems whether they are at home or at school. This relationship can also assist a student in choosing courses they are interested in or will need when they go to college or into the workforce. These individuals can make sure a student stays on the right track and give them the tools they need to be successful in high school and beyond
