Article five of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that torture, cruel, degrading, or inhumane punishments are not allowed in any country that agrees to uphold the document. After watching the three parts of “The Hidden Face of Globalization,” it is clear that female factory workers in Bangladesh do not enjoy this right. The harsh conditions the factory supervisors impose to meet deadlines include severe sleep deprivation, physical abuse (punching and slapping), and verbal abuse towards the female employees. Every single one of these conditions is violated for factory workers in Bangladesh. The female workers there explain in the documentary how there is little option to choose which job they have, working conditions and unsanitary, sudden unemployment is frequent, union membership is prevented by arbitrary arrest, and the money they are paid is not adequate to survive. The power to enforce or alleviate these conditions rests in the hands of mainly the supervisors and corporations. The supervisors use threats and violence for persuasive and physical intimidation while corporations manipulate consumers into believing the conditions are okay. Consumers have the responsibility to become aware of where their products are being made and protest the corporations that make the right violation possible. Factory Supervisors have responsibilities as leaders of their building to ensure workers have a safe and supportive atmosphere to work in. International corporations like Nike have a responsibility to ensure that the workers affiliated and working for their brand are treated humanely. Lastly, the United Nations has a responsibility to respond to these human rights violations through either hard or soft punishment.
