The Hero’s Journey In both the Speak, and The Old Man and the Sea, the main characters have a set goal they work towards. They go through an adventure called, The Hero’s Journey, where the main characters “get out of their comfort zone” in order to achieve their respective goals. Each have mentors that guide them along the way, and the heroes change their personality throughout the story for the better. Melinda Sordino, a freshman girl at Merryweather High School, in Syracuse, New York, has a lot on her plate. She is confused, shy, and afraid.
