In 1949 Joseph Campbell published, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. His book explains what he called the hero’s journey or monomyth. The hero’s journey is the pattern of archetypal stories of heros in all genres. It tells the tale of a hero who goes through certain steps and accomplishes great feats to become who they are. The hero’s journey is used in drama, myths, storytelling, etc. In fact it has been used long before Joseph Campbell gave it a name. In the novel Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, the main character Ender proves through his story that he is indeed a hero, by experiencing Joseph Campbell's monomyth. Four specific sections of the hero journey Ender's Game hits are, the ROAD OF TRIALS, the BELLY OF THE WHALE, MASTERY OF TWO …show more content…
At this point in the story, Ender is surrounded by friends and admirers, however he feels more lonely. He is thought of as God. At one point, in his thoughts, he cries , “ He had so much damn respect he wanted to scream.” (139). Ender’s road of trials brought him to a dark place, yet he continued to win and accomplish the impossible. He was pushed very hard, and never rested. Enders road of trials starts in the shuttle when he learns, battle school will not be a haven, and he would have enemies there too. He overcomes the isolation caused by Bernard, then has to earn respect from all the older soldiers as he moves up. Particularly from his power-hungry commander Bonzo, along with others who are jealous. Graff had Dragon army start fighting in battles much earlier than what was standard and set them up against higher ranked and even multiple armies. Ender was also dealing with some trauma caused by the fantasy game. During this, through his success, Ender loses his friends, and gains enemies. Then there was the fight with Bonzo, and Ender was again forced to hurt and kill someone. This further consumed Enders conscience and energy and was the last …show more content…
This finally erupts in command school when he breaks down. As soon as Ender got to command school and started training with Mazer Rackham, the pressure was back. Rackham asserts, “ ...I’m going to grind you down to dust, if I can. I’m going to hit you with everything I can imagine, and I will have no mercy, because when you face the buggers they will think of things I can’t imagine…” The cruelty in this is that Rackham actually had no control, and the whole plan depended on Ender having enough strength to, at least, complete the mission. Without knowing, he was actually commanding the IF forces against the buggers. On his last days in command school, in the BELLY OF THE WHALE Ender states, “ The days wore on, with battles every day, until at last Ender settled in the routine of the destruction of himself.” There are many specific instances that describe this. For example he wakes due to his graphic dreams to gnawing on his fist (to the point of drawing blood). At that time, in the BELLY OF THE WHALE, Ender states that his existence consisted of playing games, restless sleep, and forced eating. He is a commander, not a friend, to his leaders. This causes him to lose some of the mental stability he once had. He also breaks down physically multiple times. It did not need to be spoken outright to see that he was in his darkest

Ender is a prime example of an outsider in the book Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card. One characteristic of an outsider is being different from the majority. Ender is much more intelligent than his peers, and they dislike him for being smarter than they are. He understand how to think in null gravity, which many of the other boys cannot do. Ender is also constantly singled out by the adults around him, so it is even more difficult for him to make friends and fit in.…

The term “hero” has been around since the late fourteenth century; however, the term is of an uncertain origin (Etymology, paragraph 2). Based upon controversial etymology beliefs, Webster’s Dictionary defines a ‘hero’ as an individual that is admired for his or her great acts or fine qualities. According to Joseph Campbell, the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, an individual must go through the cycle of the hero 's journey. The life of a real life hero is reflected by the epic literary example “The Hero’s Journey” that is exhibited in the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces; therefore, a hero in today’s world must undergo the same twelve stages that are listed in “The Hero’s Journey.” The hero’s journey is known for telling…

Ender’s mother was shocked that an officer was proud of the decision Ender made that got him invited to the battle school because Graff was basically promoting violence to Ender, saying it is ok to use which made the novel disturbing. Also, the violence while in battle school made the children being in the characters more disturbing because of the actions they took. Ender and Bonzo were fighting in the bathroom because Bonzo wanted to kill him, “Ender whirled in time to see Bonzo stagger backward, his nose bleeding, gasping from surprise and pain”(211). The quote shows how Ender was defending himself from Bonzo, who wanted to kill him. The character should not have been a child and shown that violence was the problem solver.…

Orson Scott Card’s definition of an outsider conveys an idea that outsiders can see things more clearly and are important to everyone around them. He compliments their stronger sense of self compared to the rest of people in society. Card mentions how an outsider has a unique perspective than everyone else and that great heroic deeds are made by outsiders because of this unique perspective. While there is a notion that outsiders are not important, it is clear that outsiders are necessary in keeping a balanced society because they notice the conflicts insiders don’t and can initiate change.…

The death is usually represented by a descent in that, the hero travels to a place of death and when the hero returns, he or she is speculated to have been reborn. At the end of his time in Battle School, Ender is mentally and psychologically exhausted to the point where he refuses to carry on his education or “quest”. Instead of moving forward, he gives up and returns to Earth. There he stays for two months instead of the intended three days. Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…

A critical lens is a perspective that the reader uses to examine a piece of literature. Different lenses look for unique details and aspects in the text, and help the reader find new information that may have never been discovered had the piece only been read through one single perspective. The archetypal lens is a critical viewpoint which allows the reader to identify places in a story which follow or deviate from universal patterns, also known as archetypes. Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, is a character who, as before mentioned, both follows and deviates from the archetype of the Hero’s Journey.…
