The Hero's Journey Defined Summary

“The Hero’s Journey Defined” is an article by Joseph Campbell describing the recurring process that occur through the course of an odyssey. The article articulates the conditions in which a heroic journey can begin and the possible people who might be entangled. The article uncovers the process from departure of the hero to the initiation of the hero through a series of tests and finally the return of the hero back to his original state. The commencement of the journey, or the departure, is the point where the hero steps out of their comfort zone and experiences death from their home life. The heart of the campaign, or the hero’s initiation, is the section in which the hero faces tests and challenges of which prove his worth and allow him to face the ultimate challenge of which he triumphs, completing the quest with newfound power or knowledge. Campbell expounds this section of the journey of that of much difficulty, filled with challenges that tempt the hero to take questionable moral highgrounds. Upon defeating these temptations, the hero has proved his worth and will now face the challenge of atoning oneself with his father, meaning he must prove himself to his father. Once this is completed the hero will experience apotheosis, or realization of the power he has received through his father’s approval. The implication in this section is that the hero will come-to-age during this time with his newly had experiences, that will inspire his father to feel pride. The homestretch of the hero’s journey, or his return, is defined as a time where the hero receives a boon for his triumph, he is reborn into reality, and the hero must reatone to reality where the hero now has his own fate in his own
