The Heroic Qualities Of Theseus In Homer's Odyssey

Decent Essays
Theseus shows heroic qualities to the reader by being brave and intelligent. The way he is brave is in the text it states“I will kill the minotaur myself.” That shows bravery because it shows that he would fight him by himself which is putting himself in danger rather than putting others in danger. Next, Theseus shows intelligence. He plans his strategy to defeat the minotaur while waiting in his prison cell. During the night, he pours out the wine given to him. He does this because it’s been drugged to make him sleep. This shows that Theseus is intelligent and can think ahead to help himself and others.Theseus uses these two heroic traits of bravery and intelligence to help Greece free themselves from the minotaur.

Anyone who is successful in completing a gallant and courageous act, can be considered a hero. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is an admirable hero because he uses strategy instead of strength to overcome several obstacles. Homer presents this in Odysseus’s use of deception, the route he chooses to get home, his choice of words and his use of disguises. To overcome a hurdle one may wish for a great deal of strength. Yet when Odysseus came in contact with a giant Cyclops, he never questioned nor focused on his lack of vitality.…

The text states, “I tied my men under their bellies and grabbed hold of the largest ram of all” (Homer 28). This example proves that Odysseus is a hero because he thought of a way to escape from the Cyclops, which was to tie themselves under the bellies of the sheep.
