Naturally we try to avoid situations that put us in danger. While this may be true, some people risk their lives for the well being of others. This heroic quality, altruism, was recently demonstrated by a few New Yorkers. Two men saved strangers that fell onto train tracks and another two men saved strangers from horrific car accidents. I am a woman. I am a firefighter. Oftentimes it feels like those two statements were never meant to be said together, but I say them proudly. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to smile politely or laugh awkwardly when a stranger hurled a cliché in my direction, I’d be quite wealthy. It’s not easy being a firefighter.…

Everyday many people take part in heroic acts. A modern example is a war hero that rescued a woman on April 18th, 2014. A soldier named Sgt. James Yates was scheduled to be honored as a war hero at an Iowa football game. Hours before a 11-year-old son came to his door in need of his help.…

Courage is not something that is integrally human, especially in times of war when one’s life is at most risk. This time is when ones integrity is challenged the most: there are few who hope to preserve this integrity and their humanity through altruistic acts in times when kindness is a mirage. When most people’s foremost thoughts are of their self-preservation, altruism preserves and strengthens ones integrity and humanity when one risks their life for the survival of others and keeps their honor intact. In the novel The Cellist of Sarajevo, Canadian author Steven Galloway illustrates the internal moral crisis people face when confronted with their own mortality and the pain and suffering of those worse off. Galloway brilliantly demonstrates…

There are those in the world who would risk their lives for those worth living. Selflessness is a good trait to have, putting others before yourself. However, some people take it to the extreme, even risking their own lives to help save those of others. Most people take it to the point of giving away their food to help those who aren’t fortunate enough to have any, or by doing kind actions like giving away clothes. “If the cause is great, one will often neglect his own needs and wants to better provide for the needs and wants of others.”…

It is very true that these individuals risk their lives to save others, but there also is a perspective that they have a beginning and ending point of their mission. Imagine having to fear for your life on a daily basis due to the fact that you live in place where crime is everywhere and you have no way to handle it. Anthony Omari has had to deal with this pain and fear on a daily basis in a very poor area of Africa. Georg Ferdinand Duckwitz is another example of a person who has had to risk a significant amount in their life. Despite having to deal with all that, these two have done the most that they could ever do in their life: develop a highly esteemed trait displayed by individuals, who, despite adversity and personal risk, decide to act upon their ethical values to help others during difficult ethical dilemmas. Anthony Omari was worked at a low resourced orphanage that him and his mother run in Ngong,…

A big example of altruism is when Leigh Anne notices Michael Oher out in the rain while they are driving home. Once Leigh Anne saw him she told her husband to turn around so that she could go talk to him. When they pull up next to Michael she asks him if he has anywhere to stay. When he says no, she tells him that he can come and spend the night with them. Later, this would develop to them letting Michael permanently stay with them and become part of their…

The government had little involvement in the society of citizens that carry out daily functions and activities. This freedom by the citizens can be a curse when abused. Many Americans enjoyed freedom for generations as they were able to live, work, and travel with no government interruption. In reality it is easy for this freedom to be taken away due to terrorist attacks. The deadly terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 introduced Americans to international terrorism, damaged the American economy, and forever changed U.S. foreign policy and the freedom of all citizens.…

I was unable to locate an online resource about an established code of ethics for emergency services personnel in the state of Arizona. As a substitute, I chose to adopt the firefighter code of ethics listed on FEMA.gov website and authored by the National Society of Executive Fire Officers. This white paper document outlines the integrity and professionalism that it has grown to become and recognize by the communities it serves. The firefighter code of ethics establishes the groundwork for proper professionalism and behavior for firefighters to maintain and continue to cultivate their high standards of ethical integrity in their field.…

Therefore, there must have been some thought process that caused these people to veer from the course of help. The next question, then, is whether it is conscious or subconscious. We know that humans are altruistic at their core, but to what extent is this masked today? We have drifted very far from primordial behavior; we have both explicit and implicit rules of conduct. Rather than functioning through instinct, we function through thought.…
