Mountain View High School The American Revolution was a time when great heroes were born. Heroes like George Washington, Paul Revere, and Samuel Adams. Another hero, although a little less well known, but still very important, was Francis Marion. Marion’s heroic acts that helped turn the tides of the war include: disrupting enemy supply trains, distracting the British troops, and inspiring the local rebels. Francis Marion was a plantation owner in South Carolina. After Charleston was captured by the British, Marion gathered a small band of rebels to help him fight the British. One expert says, “Although virtually in a sea of enemies, Marion…kept resistance alive in South Carolina until the Continental Army could recapture the region” (Schweikart). Marion just kept fighting, even when no one else was so he started to get more and more popular as the British started to get more and more unpopular with the locals. After hearing of what Marion did to Tarleton and his men “…soon the locals—who loathed the British occupation—were cheering the Swamp Fox” (Crawford). He started to inspire the locals and show them that they didn’t have to live with the British any longer and “as his name and reputation spread, scores of volunteers rode into the lowlands to join his band” (Schweikart). This article tells about the legends and facts of Francis Marion. It talks about his personal life as well as his military life. I selected this article because it talks about how Marion inspired the colonists in South Carolina. All of the facts in this article are mentioned in the others, so they all agree that Marion was a hero.

I used this article because it talks about some of the stories that are told about Marion. It talks a lot about Marion’s background like the previous article did so they agree and are very similar.
