Wanting to avenge the death of her son, Grendel’s mother began to stalk the mead hall. When she felt the time was ready she made her move: she kills multiple men, takes back the arm of her son and abducts Hrothgar 's beloved friend. When Beowulf hears what is going on he arrives too late, the mother has returned to her swamp. When the kingdom was in a frenzy, Beowulf pledged he would go out and defeat her. “ With that the old lord sprang to his feet and praised God for Beowulf 's pledge” (1397-1398). The people had no doubt that Beowulf would let them down, for he was the hero before and he would be the hero again. Beowulf set out to find the mother, being forced by his integrity follow through with the pledge. After arriving to the swamp, Beowulf alone with the mystical sword gifted to him, swam to the bottom of the swamp to reach her lair. He began to attack. He definitely sensed that she was much stronger, so strong in fact that not even his sword could cut through her. He was struggling and it seemed there was no way out. Beowulf knew he could not give up because the entire kingdom was relying on him. He then grabbed the sword from the wall and killed the mother. He returned with the head of Grendel to prove he had followed through with his promise. This would mark Beowulf’s second victory against an evil
