A hero is usually described as someone who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities. However, another aspect someone must experience to be considered a hero is embark on a hero’s journey. A hero’s journey is when one leaves their realm after receiving their call to adventure and accepting that challenge. This person also often encounters evil forces and will be both defeated and victorious when engaging in battle with them. Beowulf fits the mold of a hero because of his fearlessness, determination, and acceptance. Beowulf heard of the devastating horrors the Danes were experiencing due to the monster Grendel. Grendel had been lurking around the kingdom of King Hrothgar for 12 years killing multiple men. Beowulf immediately knew he was the man they needed. "He announced his plan: to sail the swan 's road and search out that king, the famous prince who needed defenders. Nobody tried to keep him from going" (199-202). Although many have tried to face Grendel and were defeated, Beowulf was not only courageous, but confident enough to follow through with his plan. He felt that by completing this action, he was not only saving the Danes, but his people from any future harm. No other man tried to stop him because they knew he was the one for the job. “He moved about like the leader he was, enlisting men, the best he could find” (206-207). Once he gathered all of his men, it was time to embark on his journey.
