Joseph Campbell, an American mythological researcher, invented the Hero Cycle. He discovered that myths normally dealing with heroes have a common pattern. Years of research led Campbell to discover the stages that almost every hero goes through; these stages make up the Hero Cycle. The stages of the Hero Cycle are: Call to Adventure, Supernatural Aid, Crossing the First Threshold , The Road of Trials, Temptation from the True Path, Apotheosis, The Ultimate Boon, Rescue from Without, Crossing the Return Threshold, Master of the Two Worlds and Freedom to Live. A terrible curse has been placed on the city of Thebes. The only way to get rid of the curse it to bring the murderer of King Laius to justice. Oedipus the King of Thebes is trying to find out who the murderer is. The story of Oedipus the King starts with Oedipus’s Call to Adventure which is when the hero is presented with a problem. Oedipus is presented with the problem of his city being under at horrible siege. The priest describes the situation as, “Disease infects fruit blossoms in our land, disease infects our herd of grazing cattle, makes women in labor lose their children, and deadly pestilence, that fiery god, swoops down to blast the city with groans and howls (Oedipus the King pg.1).” The second step of the Hero Cycle is Supernatural Aide which are people who help the hero along the way. Since the city is suffering and the people have come to ask their king for relief from their hardships, Oedipus sends Creon, his brother-in-law to get Supernatural Aide from Apollo, “to learn from him what I (Oedipus) might do or say to save our city (Oedipus the King pg. 1)”. Oedipus learns he can save the city by killing or exiling Laius’s murderer. To do this, he receives another Supernatural Aide from Teiresias. Teiresias is a prophet, who is blind. The Hunger Games, is a fight to the death between twelve districts. The tributes are taken to the Capital where they are trained to fight and learn how to act proper on camera. “We are each given our own chambers that have a bedroom, dressing area, and a private bathroom with hot and cold running water we don 't have hot water at home unless we boil it (The Hunger Games pg. 42)”. During the games, Katniss becomes allies with Peeta. They play out the role of star crossed loves. When they are the only two left, they attempt suicide, however they are stopped by announcer and made the winners. “I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark (The Hunger Games pg. 345).” This brings us tenth step of the Hero Cycle which is The Master of the Two Worlds. The Master of the Two Worlds when the hero still has piece of the underworld with him or her. The Master of the Two Worlds for Katniss is returning to District 12, but still having the memories from the Hunger Games.
